TESTIMONY OF KEN REGAN

On September 16, 2010 I had a simple “life insurance” exam due to some policy updating I had going on.  Just over a month later on October 22nd my insurance agent and friend called to tell me the insurance company advised him my PSA was elevated.  I was a bit surprised and asked “to what?”  He said they don’t release that specific information to him due to privacy laws.  I told him I had requested my full blood panel results, so I’d probably get them in the mail shortly.  Pondering the news of a possible elevated PSA, I realized I was overdue for a physical exam and decided to schedule one with my Internal Medicine doctor.  I was able to get in the following week, October 29th.  I met with my doctor, Dr. Stewart, a couple of days after my physical to go over the exam results.  He said everything was great except my PSA number was a bit high at 4.16.  He recommended I meet with a urologist as a precautionary measure.  So I scheduled an appointment with a urologist for November 10th.  At that meeting he said that there was a 75% chance the 4.16 PSA meant nothing, but that I should have an ultrasound and biopsy of my prostate to be sure.  We later scheduled and I had a biopsy (12 samples) and ultrasound of my prostate on Tuesday, December 14th.  The following Monday, December 20th, my urologist’s nurse called and let me know that cancer cells were found in three of the twelve biopsy samples. Gulp!  While I had been praying and was at peace with what the Lord had planned for me, I was still somewhat dumbstruck with the news.  It was a big “wow”.

On December 27th I called and visited with a valued Christian friend, Rich Irish.  He had been diagnosed with prostate cancer about 4.5 years earlier.  The details of his diagnosis, including the number of biopsy samples showing cancer and their Gleason Scores, was nearly identical to mine.  Also he was about the same age as me when diagnosed.  Rich shared with me the thorough research he embarked upon subsequent to his diagnosis, including reading multiple books and calling their authors to probe further with detailed questions.  He said he was very close to commencing a treatment option (radical prostatectomy) when he began uncovering more and more intriguing support for a diet option.  After much prayer and study on the diet option and knowing his prostate cancer was in the early stages and most likely slow growth, Rich opted to pursue the diet option.  He began immediately and seriously. Rich’s PSA began dropping with each subsequent blood draw and testing.  In about a year, his PSA count had dropped to below 2.00.  Rich has his blood drawn twice a year now.  His June 2011 PSA was recorded at 1.91 a drop from 1.98 from his 6-month earlier number!

After giving my decision much prayer and with encouragement and support from a couple of close friends with whom I work, I opted to pursue the same diet path as Rich.  I figured I could always “change gears” if it didn’t work for me for some reason.  So basically beginning January 1, 2011 I began the diet changes Mr. Irish recommended.  On March 24th, almost 3 months after beginning my new nutrition diet plan, I had my blood drawn.  That afternoon the nurse called to advise me my PSA had dropped to 3.83.  It had stopped going up, turned-around, and began coming down.  Wow!  The good Lord was using this nutrition diet to positively impact my health in a significant way.  Fast forward another 3 months (aprx) to June 17th.  Again, I went in and had my blood drawn to get a PSA reading.  Later that day my urologist (not a nurse) called me to tell me my PSA had again dropped, this time down to 3.05!

Mr. Irish has encouraged me every step of the way.  He was much less surprised than me to hear the positive results.  His expectation is my PSA number will continue to drop at each of my future blood draws until it gets somewhere below 2.00 where it will likely stabilize.  And that is my goal, to continue the diet and have my PSA stabilize somewhere between 1.00 and 2.00.  I will continue to have my blood drawn every 3 months and get an updated PSA number.

I attribute this health success to the Lord’s grace answering my prayers and the prayers of many on my behalf.  He pointed me to Rich and the diet Rich embarked upon.  He has given me discipline, joy in the process, and results.  Like Rich, I have enjoyed many other supplemental benefits as a result of this new eating lifestyle and adventure.  Stay tuned!
